About Us

An ode to America’s rich whiskey heritage, Native Spirits takes you on a journey through time. When our Celtic ancestors founded Brevard, NC, they brought centuries-old heritage and craftsmanship to the Carolinas. Today, as seventh-generation “native sons,” we proudly continue our family’s legacy in the region. Native Spirits is more than just whiskey; it’s a narrative of timeless craftsmanship and enduring tradition.

Crafting the spirit of appalachia

Founded in 2021 in Brevard, NC, Native Spirits is a family-run distillery of seventh-generation natives of the region tracing our origins back to one the original founders of what is now Asheville, NC, These original settlers brought with them a deep knowledge of Celtic whiskey distilling that has been passed down through generations. This rich lineage honors the Carolinas’ pre-prohibition legacy, making us the first whisky house in Transylvania County since statewide prohibition was enacted in 1909. Our unwavering commitment to craftsmanship and tradition ensures that each sip tells a story of timeless artistry and dedication.

At Native Spirits, we blend centuries-old Celtic techniques with a passion for crafting exceptional spirits. Our flagship bourbon, Celtic Honour, launched in March 2024, epitomizes this dedication.

Embark on a journey through the ages and experience the unparalleled legacy of Native Spirits. Each bottle is a proud testament to the enduring spirit of whiskey making, celebrating the heritage and craftsmanship that define the Southern Highlands.

Honoring a Legacy:
The Rich History of Whisky Making in Western North Carolina

The history of whiskey in western North Carolina is a tale of heritage, resilience, and craftsmanship. In the early 19th century, our founding ancestors from Scotland and Ireland brought their distilling knowledge and traditions to the rugged Appalachian region. These pioneers, skilled in the art of whiskeey making, found the fertile valleys and clear mountain springs of western North Carolina ideal for producing high-quality whiskey.

These early distillers adapted their old-world techniques to the new environment, using locally grown grains using methods taught to them by the mighty Cherokee, and sourcing pure mountain water to craft distinctive spirits. The isolation of the Appalachian region allowed these whiskey makers to refine their craft, passing down their methods through generations. This rich distilling tradition was an integral part of the local culture, with family recipes and techniques carefully preserved and handed down.

In the latter half of the 19th century, Western North Carolina emerged as America’s largest producer of whisky, with distillers shipping products across the nation. Hundreds of licensed WNC distilleries carted their liquid to Statesville, NC. In fact, so much whiskey was received by the town’s rectifying houses during this period that Statesville was considered “the whiskey capital of the world.”
